What to Know About Our Food Containers
Recently, there’s been a proliferation of articles related to the toxicity of products made from black plastic. Since we pack our meals in such containers, these reports are alarming, to say the least. As safety is our team’s top priority, we dug into the research and wanted to share our findings.
What we learned, in a nutshell: Nuance is important and we feel confident that the food we deliver is safe for clients and their families.
The studies highlight two main points. First, the majority of toxic leaching comes from products made from recycled plastic. At Home Appétit, we never use recycled plastic. Our containers are made in New Jersey out of virgin plastic (which means it’s made from new, not recycled, materials)—and are BPA-free.
Second, the majority of chemical leaking occurs when the plastic is heated. We never put hot food into containers. In fact, we have specialized equipment in our kitchen that quickly cools food as soon as it’s prepared. This process allows us to deliver high-quality, long-lasting meals that are also safe. Containers remain chilled until they reach your door.
Lastly, our containers are microwave safe, but we don’t recommend you heat food in them, for safety and taste reasons. We recommend an oven, stove or air fryer.
